Gilbert W. Boyd was born in Readsboro, Vermont in 1905 but grew up and was educated in Detroit, Michigan. Both his bachelor's and master's degrees in metallurgy were conferred by the University of Detroit. After a short term teaching at his alma mater, he worked for General Motors until joining the faculty at Michigan College of Mining and Technology (now Michigan Technological University) in Houghton, Michigan in 1937.
